Well that is now a problem of the past. Several companies offer their product free for use in a non commercial environment. Two of the most notable are AVG by Grisoft Inc and avast! by ALWIL Software.
AVG has been around for several years and were the first company to offer free anti-virus protection as well as virus definition updates. Since then they have begun to offer commercial products that range from servers to home users.
avast! is relatively new to the free anti-virus arena but their product is already receiving high accolades. avast! also provides commercial products to protect workstations and servers in the business place.
Both companies offer a professional version that offers priority updates meaning you will receive the update virus definitions before the free version users. Even if you were to purchase the commercial version it is still just a fraction of the cost of other major anti-virus products.
